It was very interesting when I found a post titled The Bad Boys next Door......., it is a blog posted on Madame Amy’s thoughts on Our Government. What really caught my attention is the awareness that Amy brings out of the terrible violence that our neighbor country of Mexico is currently experiencing. She points out statistics that are not easily processed in one’s head, such as 15,000 homicides in 2010 related to the drug cartels. This number increased to 34,612 and counting since December 2006 based on her research.
Amy also asked why this problem doesn’t take more precedence with the press? Would it be the case that by not fully publicizing the situation in Mexico minimizes any collective hysteria in the U.S. since just across a river or separated by a fence, we can be feeling terrorists breathing behind our necks? Already two off-duty US government employees on their way to Mexico City were gunned down by these individuals that are looking after the interests of the drug cartels. Also last year, US embassy employees in Ciudad Juarez were gunned down while in their vehicle. It is understood that the violence is generated by a few bad apples and it doesn’t reflect the Mexican population as a whole.
Is it that the United States is waiting to see what happens next door? If foreign governments in the Middle East like Libya are trying to contain internally their own “mess”, how come we can fly around the world and “defend” their citizen’s interests? Is it really that? Or is the U.S. looking after its own interests such as oil that is not available in Mexico (other than the gulf that bears its name, which is regulated most of it by U.S. law)?
Now we know that with the economy, everything is based on demand. If there is demand there will always be some-one to offer a product. Is our Government afraid that it won’t be able to control this addiction that is eating alive the lives of our citizens’ with the use of illicit drugs? I would hate to think that our Government is giving up already before trying, because I am sure that the Mexican Government can get out of the situation they are in. Take for example Colombia ; their people were able to get rid of the main puppeteers or also known as “Drug Lords.” Now Colombia offers one of the most rewarding travel destinations.
Finally, if our citizens are commenting so much about illegal immigration, maybe Amy found the answer to this issue. As she states, If Mexicans can live happily and feeling safe in their own country, maybe illegal immigration can be minimized.
